I am bewitched by the beauty around me; I want to record it.

Figures

I had never intended to be a portrait painter, but in the early 1980s found myself unable to resist the opportunity to study with the renowned Chatov brothers. I studied portraiture three days a week for three years, and spent twelve years after that, painting portraits. I stopped when I realized I was painting for others, not myself. This was keeping me from progressing as an artist, as I wanted to paint in a looser and less realistic style.

Even today I still love to paint figures. It is the supreme gift of the muse to succeed in gaining likeness and at the same time create a beautiful painting.
